No Dogs Left Behind Keeps on Saving Lives

Dogs don’t care about how our laws change or what protections are in place for their welfare. They have unconditional love to give, and there’s a human out there who can receive it.

In many places across the world, there are often minimal safeguards available for animals to prevent cruelty against them. Sadly, that often leads to a life of abuse, torture, and worse.

Jeffrey Beri is the founder of the organization No Dogs Left Behind. He says that after watching several documentaries about animal cruelty, there had to be something he could do.

“I left my job as a mechanical engineer and a fashion jewelry designer to start saving lives and being a voice for the voiceless,” Beri said. Since that first moment when he decided that he needed to do something, tens of thousands of animals have been saved by his organization and its allies. [[1]]

About 10,000 Volunteers Work on the Frontlines

Beri says that animal care must become a global priority. “We believe that no country has the right to operate without animal welfare laws and that reckless slaughtering must come to an end.”

You can find 10,000 volunteers working with No Dogs Left Behind, often in some of the worst and harshest places on the planet. They provide emergency response, evacuation, and other support to ensure someone is available when a call for help goes out.

“We’re not combat professionals, and we’re not political or religious,” said Beri. “We are only there to risk our lives on the frontline for the voiceless.”

No Dogs Left Behind works to rescue and reunite pets with their owners in Ukraine and other conflict zones. When they went into Afghanistan to rescue 300 survivors, the volunteers were met by the Taliban and their assault rifles.

Those confrontations have led Beri to take an aggressive approach when saving lives, even when medical and security teams are with them. Although he doesn’t have a combat background, Beri and his volunteers run drills, create reconnaissance scenarios, and plan the necessary steps for a safe mission.

Many East Asian Countries Have No Animal Welfare Laws

Because some countries don’t have animal welfare laws or regulations, people often steal animals. Chinese police recently intercepted a truck with almost 400 canines that was headed to a dog-meat festival. [[2]]

Another 126 were rescued, most of them wearing collars, from an illegal slaughterhouse. [[3]]

Beri’s first history rescue was in the same area. He and his team saved 121 dogs in 2016, spending eight months treating and socializing the animals to ensure they’d be ready for new homes. Their work included microchipping, vaccination, and effective shelter operation protocols.

No Dogs Left Behind exposes these incidents and leverages local laws and regulations to shut down the activities. Once the animals are saved, they’re put into a care network that eventually leads to many finding a new forever home.

Beri says that education is another critical component of their operations. Many of the volunteers provide pamphlets that explore the dangers of illegal operations and wet markets. “In the face of COVID, people have experienced death all around them,” he said. “We provide guidance and education to help people understand that we can prevent the next pandemic.”

Although factory farming has led to more food availability, Beri also says it leads to disease and cruelty. It’s not just dogs that need to be saved. Millions of birds have been killed over the years because of avian flu exposures caused by reckless care and minimal environmental oversight.

“It’s absolutely unacceptable,” Beri said. “I encourage everyone to scream louder.”

Steps for Adopting Dogs from No Dogs Left Behind

No Dogs Left Behind follows a standard adoption protocol. That process starts with an application that helps their team get to know a potential family better. Since many of the animals have faced intense cruelty and death, there can be behavioral challenges that the team wants adopters to understand before placement.

An image of a state ID or driver’s license and photos of a yard, park, or home where the dog will live is also mandatory. After the application is approved, adopters receive direct communication through WhatsApp about their dog, including pictures and videos.
